New Master Program at the Berne University of the Arts: Composition for Symphonic Wind Orchestra and Brass Band with Oliver Waespi

Date: March 15th, 2017

The Composition and Theory department already offers a series of high quality Master

curriculums, including Contemporary Composition, Composition and Arrangement in Jazz and Théâtre Musical. The new Master in Composition for Symphonic Wind Orchestra and Brass Band will complete these branches in reaction to the vibrant development of wind and brass music making during the last couple of years.

The main subject will be taught by composer Oliver Waespi, whose works for symphonic winds and brass band have received world-wide acclaim amongst leading ensembles. Moreover, Oliver Waespi’s body of work includes numerous works for symphony orchestras and chamber ensembles as well, thus enabling him to share his experience in several fields of music in order to embed the new program in a wider aesthetic context.

The new Master program is taught over 4 semesters and requires a total of 120 ECTS-Credits (90 ECTS-Credits if passed as a second Master).

The principal subject will be completed by elective courses in arts practice, theory and research, optional seminars and courses within the rich Minor program as well as the final Master’s thesis. Hence, students in the new Master program will benefit from a vast array of courses covering much of contemporary and traditional composition techniques and aesthetics.

The main subject will be taught in German, French or English, according to the preferences of the students.
