Landscapes, Three Colombian Sketches for Trumpet and Band by Colombian trumpeter, composer, and arranger Daniel Alberto Moreno V. is our Composition of the Week.
The work was performed on July 21, 2026, during WASBE’s 21st International Conference in Rio de Janeiro by the Javeriana University Symphonic Band, featuring Juan Felipe Lince as trumpet soloist and conducted by Patricia Vanegas Ruiz.
Landscapes was commissioned in 2025 by the Santander Brass Academy and the National Symphonic Band of Colombia.
The three sections of the work are performed without interruption. Their names are Sabana; Cadenas montañosas and Litorales.

Landscapes has a duration of about 17 minutes and it is scored for wind band, piano and percussion.

Daniel Alberto Moreno’s work is characterized by an exploration of traditional Colombian rhythms from a contemporary perspective, integrating elements of symphonic music, modern musical languages, and Latin American music.
He began his musical studies as a trumpet player while developing a deep interest in composition. His academic training allowed him to develop an artistic identity that bridges the worlds of classical tradition and Colombia’s popular and folk music, with a particular focus on writing for symphonic band and chamber ensembles.
He is currently a trumpeter with the Pereira Municipal Symphonic Band and a professor at the University of Caldas, where he earned his bachelor’s degree in music. He was recently selected as a winner of the Banco de la República’s Young Composers and Young Soloists Series and was also a finalist in the “Adolph Herseth in Memoriam” orchestral excerpts competition at the 2023 Maspalomas International Trumpet Festival.
He was a member of the Colombian Youth Philharmonic during the 2017 and 2020 seasons, performing in concert tours throughout Colombia, Germany, and Austria under the direction of conductor Andrés Orozco-Estrada. In 2018, he performed in a series of concerts in several cities across Italy and France with the ensemble Ensamble Pa’l Viento and participated as a scholarship recipient in masterclasses at the Cartagena International Music Festival in 2015 and 2017.
He has been a member of symphonic ensembles including the Caldas Symphony Orchestra and the Manizales Municipal Band, performing as a soloist on numerous occasions. He has also been a member of ensembles such as Ensamble Pa’l Viento and Mulato Ensamble, which have received awards in prestigious Colombian music and chamber music competitions and festivals, including the Mono Núñez Festival, the National Pasillo Festival, and the Iberacademy Chamber Music Festival, among others.
His compositions have been premiered by ensembles including the National Symphony Orchestra of Colombia, the National Symphonic Band of Colombia, the Manizales Municipal Band, and the Colombian Brass Quintet. His music has been performed in countries including Argentina, the United States, Spain, Slovenia, France, Peru, Italy, and Germany.
He has participated as a trumpeter, composer, and music producer in various recording productions. He has also received trumpet lessons and participated in masterclasses with renowned musicians including Oscar Fernando Trujillo, Juan Carlos Valencia Ramos, Juan Fernando Avendaño, Pacho Flores, Sylvain Maillard, and Lionel Jaquerod, among others.
