Danza Colorista, by Spanish composer, conductor, and pedagogue Rafael Muller Grau is our Composition of the Week.

Danza Colorista was written in January 1995; the work is dedicated to the “Filà Andaluces of Alcoy” on their role as Christian Alférez that year. It was premiered at the Christian Entry parade by the Banda Nova de Alcoy, conducted by José Francisco Molina Pérez.

In January 2002, the composer prepared a transcription for symphony orchestra, which he dedicated to his friend, the musician José Rafael Pascual Vilaplana. The orchestral version was premiered that same year by Pascual Vilaplana conducting the Albacete Symphony Orchestra.

Danza Colorista is scored for a small concert band setting; it has a duration of 4’50 and it is available at Omnes Bands Editions.

Rafael Muller Grau was born in Alcoy (Spain) in 1962. He received his advanced musical training at the Higher Conservatories of Alicante and Valencia and at the University of Alicante, earning degrees in composition, orchestration, harmony, counterpoint, fugue, and choral and orchestral conducting. Among his principal teachers were Amando Blanquer, Eduardo Cifre, and Manuel Galduf, and he furthered his conducting studies with Jan Cober.

As a conductor, he has led nearly 500 concerts, working with more than 60 bands and numerous orchestras and choirs in Spain and abroad. His music has been performed by leading municipal and symphonic bands throughout Spain and internationally in Europe, the Americas, and the United States. He has received multiple awards in composition competitions, including six first prizes.

Several of his works have been selected as compulsory pieces in major band competitions, and two (Al Primero Tró and Danza Colorista) were chosen for inclusion in the 4 Winds catalogue for international distribution. His compositions are published by Omnes Bands and Piles. He is a member of the Valencian Academy of Music and currently teaches composition-related subjects at the professional conservatories of Xàtiva and Albaida.
