Obituary: Dennis L. Johnson (1946 - 2026)

Dennis L. Johnson, an powerful force in the world of wind ensembles and wind bands, passed away on May 23, 2026 at age 80 in Murray, Kentucky. Murray was his home for many years with his wife Randy and their children, Erika and Reid. He was the Director of Bands and Symphony Orchestra at Murray State University from 1985-2016, after which time he was granted emeritus status. Â
Professor Johnson was a distinguished conductor, educator, and a Past President of the World Association for Symphonic Bands and Ensembles (WASBE). Known for his global footprint in wind band music, his relationship with the organization spans decades and has significantly shaped the international symphonic community. He served as Secretary for WASBE from 1993-2003, and as President from 2003-2005.  He presided over the 12th International Conference in Singapore in 2005 and also provided vital leadership as President-Elect for the 11th International Conferece in Jonkoping, Sweden in 2003. His time as a WASBE officer was a time of great growth and advancement of the organization.  Internationally, his global engagements span major events in Australia, Japan, the Netherlands, Taiwan, and across the Americas.Â
Under Professor Johnson’s leadership the Murray State University Wind Ensemble made several prestigious appearances including two special invitational concerts in Carnegie Hall; two appearances at the College Band Directors National Association Conventions and at the International Wind Band Conference in Manchester, England. In the Spring of 2011 the MSU Symphony Orchestra appeared in Chicago’s famed Orchestra Hall.
Other professional recognitions came as a member of the American Bandmasters Association, state chair of the College Band Directors National Association (1998-2000), Phi Beta Mu (Outstanding Contributor to Music award 1999), and being named a Kentucky Colonel by the state legislature in 1999.
Professor Johnson was a proud alumnus of the University of Michigan, receiving his Bachelor of Music Education in 1968 and Michigan State University, where he earned his Master of Music in 1981. He also taught at the Interlochen Arts Academy, and at Western Illinois University, Macomb from 1981 to 1985.
For those lucky enough to have known Dennis, he will always be remembered for his impeccable musicianship, unswerving dedication to excellence, warm and generous hospitality, and loyal friendship. We toast you dear friend, with a cold beer (in a glass) and Jagermeister.
